We’ll Miss You Juwan

By elijerome

It’s Tuesday, October 30th, 6:00pm and I am killing time until 8:00pm, more on that later.
This weekend, I decided to lay low, chillax, save money, catch up on my dearest of friends sleep. Not to say I did nothing, as I did score 5 times. Ready for it? Are you sure? I scored 5 of my teams 9 goals in futbul (soccer for you dumbass Americans) on Friday, but we still ended up losing 10-9. After the game, I took my socks off to reveal large holes in each of my feet, no skin, only a raw pink, sensitively disgusting layer of flesh that I didn’t even know existed. I have been hobbling slightly since, but am feeling better now, ready to play again though it appears we won’t have a chance this week. I did eat some great food this weekend, a great steak on Friday and a wonderful wok on Saturday at this place called the Soul Café. This place was hip, Bootsy Collins was pictured on front of the menu, the logo of the place is of a cool looking afro dude in shades, his image was plastered all over the place, the wallpaper, lights etc… They had huge dices hanging from the ceiling and a DJ spun groovy tunes over the sound system. I had sake for the first time, wasn’t that impressed, who wants to drink a hot alcoholic beverage? This guy doesn’t. Didn’t do much else, but that’s ok because my weekend started yesterday, on Monday. I went to this percussion jam thingy at this wonderful outdoor venue for a little over $2.00 it’s like a 13 piece percussion band and a director, who entertained the crowd for 2 non-stop hours. Kids in Argentina aren’t afraid to dance, hippies or not, which made it a lot of fun. I stayed alcohol free for the evening, so perhaps I was not as loose as Lindsey Lohan, but still shook my ass like a salt shaker or whatever the kids are doing these days. (Souldja boy or some shit like that I hear?) A couple of rappers joined the band for a few tunes, one may have been Daddy Yankee but I might just be making an unfair claim there because I don’t know of any other Latin rappers.
After the show, I grabbed a quick burrito (nowhere near as swell as Chipotle but still fills me up) then met up with 4 lady friends to attend Las Kelly’s( I could be wrong with the name) which is a 3 piece band of females who were playing for free not to far from me casa. These gals hail from B.A. and I was surprisingly impressed with their catchy little punky pop numbers. They played short little songs, all three of them singing, energetic, drunken crowd. They seem like a band that could one day be named officially “cool” by Pitchfork. I would have bought a cd or a t-shirt if they had them but oh well, maybe I’ll get to catch them again before I return. Tonight, I am planning on (weather providing) going to see Juana Molina at the same venue as the drum thing for $5.00. The venue I should mention is outside, but surrounded by walls. The band played on a large stairs structure, 10 feet into the air. Afterwards, I have made a vague promise to go out dancing at the underground drums and bass club I mentioned a few posts back. They have a Tuesday night event every week, and while I am not sure what kind of music it will be, it will most likely be fun, which is my middle name. Granted Halloween starts at midnight, so I may or may not wear a 3 piece suit with a mask, time and liquor consumption shall tell. Speaking of the latter, I have been drinking less here then I do at home, which is kind of surprising. For some reason, I have been lacking the desire to drink here, I don’t quite no why. Perhaps it is because that at home I only drink when I go to shows or dancing, not just to lame ass bars like so many of us youngsters.
This weekend, I will become one of only a few Flashers to enter Uruguay, defying all odds and gravity to cross the imaginary line known as a boundary. I am debating, and would like some feedback as to whether or not I should stay the entire weekend in this more foreign land, or return on Friday night to see Hot Chip in B.A. Hot Chip is guaranteed dancing goodness, and has a 90% chance of a smiling Eli, while Uruguay could be some eye opening, life changing experience or whatever. I can also visit Uruguay after my program ends because it is very close to B.A., but it’d also be nice to go with friends. I have seen Hot Chip before, and they are a blast live and only cost $12.00, so give me some feedback.
In other music news, I purchased my ticket to day 1 of the Personal, whose lineup is not as solid as the rumored one, still includes Snoop D-O-G-G, Cypress Hill, Fischerspooner (DJ Set), CocoRosie, Datarock, Phoenix, Gotan Project and some others who I don’t know. I have opted to skip out on seeing day 2, which has Chris Cornell and Jamie Lidell, but not much else, instead I am going to put that money towards the Rapture, Toto or Battles, and quite possibly all three. November is the new Rocktober, sorry Bobby.
T’wovles start on Friday, really wish I was home to see a game, however I am fortunate to have a friend in Jesse Meehan who has purchased me a ticket for the Boston game in February, and for that I am grateful.
That’s enough ramblin for now,
Happy Halloween
Boo!
