It’s monday, it’s storming outside which is cool, just cool. I don’t really feel like writing a whole lot because I just woke up from a nap and am too lazy to turn on the tea kettle to make some mate. Twas a good week here in Buenos Aires, weather was nice, did some shopping. I bought a really expensive pair of pants, the most expensive article of clothing in my repotoire. They shine like gold and can perform meneal household tasks. I don’t really know why I bought them, but I did. I also bought a pair of FILS. Remember them shoes? I am gonna wear them during my weekly soccer game and maybe to play 1 on 1 basketball with Larry Johnson, if the occasion ever arises. Hmmm what else, I guess the highlight of my weekend was saturday/sunday. Saturday night, while many of you blog readers were immensed into an entire night of LCD/Arcade Fire, the author was also dancing to dance music, Tosca Dwell Soundsystem and Richard Dorfmeister. The show was outside at this beautiful art center, weather was great, plenty of good looking ladies and the best part of all is that is was free. It was supposed to cost$26 dollars, but when i approached the gate, the lady in charge asked me something in Spanish, I muttered “no entiendo” which means “I don’t understand” and kept on walking and that was that. The music was great, the visuals even greater. It was part of a 3 day audio/visual event that included 1/2 of Depeche Mode spinning a set on Sunday. Behind the stage was a video screen that featured the most insane visuals I have ever laid eyes on, it was like being on acid without being on acid, just crazy shit, but really cool. The funny thing is that they don’t know how to sell drinks in B.A. like they do in the states. The alcoholic beverage choices were as follows: Gancia; which is white wine either blended with orange juice and ice or served over ice with lemon juice and 7up. Otherwise, they had Dr Lemon Vodka which looked just like a Mike’s Hard Lemonade or they sold little bottles of white wine. That was it, no beer, no booze, only wine. Maybe thats why they are so skinny and pretty, which they all are, the women that is.
Didn’t stay out too late saturday because sunday I went to my first futbol game, Racing Club vs. Lanus. Lanus is my team, but my roomate and his dad are Racing fans and the game was at their home stadium. We took a bus to the game, bought our tickets $4 and sat down and people watched as we were a few hours early. People don’t really tailgate here, bu they all come out early and drink soda and eat these horrible looking grey meat sandwhiches that have been sitting out in the sun all day. Their is a patdown prior to entering the stadium and I saw a few hundred cops, some in riot gear, keeping the scene cool. It was hot and sunny out and many of the males there inclduing myself took our shirts off. Inside, with our shirts still off, the seating is first come first serve for whatever section your tickets are for. We had the cheap seats which is the upper level but you can still see just great, nothing at all like the upper deck at the dome or target center. They only sell coke, popcicles and hamburgers inside, nothing else, no water, no cheeseburgers, no walkaway sundaes. I can’t even really describe the atmostphere inside the place, the fans are so fucking devoted, the section behind the net, which would be similar to the student section of a college team, is fucking packed with the color blue(Racing’s color) Blue smoke, face paint, tatoos, clothing, umbrellas. These guys are absolutely nuts for their team. You see people coming into the games, covered in dirt, looking hungry and clearly poverty stricken, but are willin and able to spend their paychecks, if they have one, on their soccer team. Nothing in the U.S. compares to it, its all about the game. There are no cheerleaders, no halftime show, no electronic scoreboard, only 90 minutes of soccer, and when a goal is scored, all hell breaks loose. The first 3 rows of the “student section” are left empty because when a goal is scored they all rush down, jumping up and down like kangaroos on trampolines. For safety reasons, they are unable to run onto the field, as between the crowd and field is a barb-wire fence and a motherfucking 18th century moat. I remained quiet most of the game, which ended in a 1-1 tie(but a tie at a home stadium is considered a loss to many) not wanting to blow my cover in a sea of Racing fans. My fans are on the other side of the stadium, guarded by cops with shotguns and whom are required to enter and exit the stadium on the opposite side of the stadium and leave 30 minutes before the home team fans are allowed to leave. The cursing from one side to the other is non stop, your mother is a whore, and bitch were the only ones I can pick up, but even the 5 year old Racing fans can be heard yelling these wonderful phrases.
It was a ton of fun, and something that you need to see in person.
This week, I get to see some concerts, The Wailers tommorow and Joanna Newsom on friday. Personal Fest will be announced soon, which will feature Wilco, Smashing Pumpkins, Chris Cornell, Feist Coco Rosie, Hot Chip and Datarock among others. Something to look forward to, as well as next weekend is the start of my semester break, in which I will either be traveling to Machu Pichu in Peru or else the Southernmost city in the southern hemisphere in Chile.
Enjoy your oncoming winter
